What is a cocktail? When the word cocktail started being used in America (most likely in the early 1800s), it referred to a drink made with spirit, water, sugar, and bitters. Over time the word has been assigned to every sort of mixed drink, but the original definition refers to a family of drinks that includes the Old-Fashioned, Manhattan, Martini, and many others. Over the course of the past three hundred years of mixed drinks history, since the first punch and julep were prepared, a solid arsenal of classic cocktail recipes has emerged.
